Over 50's enjoying best sex of their lives

Over 50’s enjoying the best sex of their lives

Contrary to popular belief, it would seem the over 50’s are enjoying better sex now than at any other time in their life.  Whilst the thirty something generation struggle with long working hours, young children and the burden of meeting mortgage repayments, the older generation have the time and privacy to enjoy their love lives to the full.

According to a new survey by sylk.co.uk aimed at women aged 45+, 68% make love more than once a month and of those 36% between 1 and 3 times a week and 6% more than 3 times a week!  When asked whether they thought sex was better now than when they were younger, the majority answered yes giving the following reasons:1. More time and privacy2. Know each other so well3. Less worried about it4. Less tierd as our children are grown up5. Less stressed by work as retiredFar from being shy in the bedroom, nearly 90% of respondents said they had used a sex toy, 23% have tried sexy role play and nearly ½ said they used erotic books and films.  Activities usually associated with the young and adventurous.

This new piece of research blows apart the myth that sex stops once you hit 50. How did this myth start? In Victorian times, women were warned not to have sex post menopause as it could be fatal.  Physicians were worried that sexual thoughts would bring about regrets for lost allure which would result in disease!  Medical books and popular culture at the time often portray women of a certain age as borderline insane.  The reason:  they were no longer attractive to the opposite sex.

With Anthea Turner, Daryl Hannah, Kristin Thomas, Nigella Lawson and Tilda Swinton all turning 50 this year, we know that women don’t stop being attractive when they hit a certain age.  Just look at Valerie Bertinelli the year before turning 50 showing off a body most 20 year olds would die for.

The advent of the cougar phenonomen is also testamount to the fact that older ladies are very much seen as sexy in this day and age.  Perhaps the fifty something ladies are starting to realise this as 54% of respondents said that if they were single they would happily date an older guy.

Whilst the aging process and menopause can have an impact on our enjoyment of sex, women are taking control of their bodies to ensure they continue to have fulfilling and loving relationships.  Some of the steps respondents had taken to overcome difficulties like intimate dryness and loss of libido which nearly all the respondents had suffered from at some stage, include:1. Talk to your partner about your concerns2. Allow longer for foreplay3. Use a lubricant4. Create a romantic setting
5. Reduce alcohol and caffeine intake

Whilst this is great news and a huge leap forward from the Victorian days of old, there are still many women out there who think its’ wrong to want a sex life and are too embarrassed to discuss their problems.  Estimates suggest only a quarter of women with vaginal dryness seek medical help.

With new research from The Lancet suggesting that by 2050, menopausal women will no longer have 1/3 of their lives ahead of them, but ½, we need to make it easier for women to talk about intimate issues.

Whilst sex isn’t for everyone, it is hard to replicate the intimacy that comes from making love. Sexual problems can lead to a loss of self-confidence and relationship problems. Often there is an easy solution to something that feels like an insurmountable problem.  There’s no point spending half your life suffering in silence.
