Frequently Asked Questions
- Why is Sylk different to other lubricants?
Sylk is made from natural ingredients including a unique plant extract – the kiwifruit vine gum. The vine gum replicates the vagina’s natural pH balance and is very similar to natural lubrication. Click here to see our full ingredients list.
- Can I use Sylk if I am allergic to kiwifruit?
The plant extract comes from the vine gum, not the kiwifruit and is therefore safe even if a kiwifruit allergy is present.
- Why are natural ingredients important?
Our skin, including the vaginal area, absorbs small quantities of everything we put on to it. Products made by reputable manufacturers and sold by reputable retailers are rigorously tested for safety. However the cumulative effect of all the toiletries and cosmetics we use can sometimes, in some people cause reactions or allergies. At Sylk we believe less is more.
- What are parabens?
Parabens are common chemical preservatives found in everything from food to shampoo. (Visit our paraben section for more information.) They have been used by cosmetic and pharmaceutical companies for many years and are considered safe. In recent years some research has suggested parabens disrupt hormones in people and the environment, and they have been found in cancer tumours. Many consumers now choose to buy paraben free products.
- Does Sylk contain parabens?
No. Sylk is free from parabens and other nasty chemicals.
- Why is pH balance important?
The healthy vagina has a natural pH which is slightly acidic, creating a hostile environment for harmful bacteria. If the pH balance is disturbed bacteria can multiply causing infections.
- Is Sylk tested on animals?
No. Sylk does not test its product on animals.
Sylk and sex

Yes. Sylk mimics your own natural lubrication so can enhance your pleasure when playing with toys by making sure you stay extra hydrated when making love. Sylk is tasteless, odour and stain free.

We would recommend that you put a drop of Sylk natural lubricant on the tip of the condom and then massage plenty on the outside
- Is Sylk safe to use for anal or oral sex ?
Yes, Sylk is made with natural ingredients so it is safe to use anally and orally.
Sylk and pregnancy
- I am trying for a baby, can I use Sylk?
No. Whilst Sylk will not harm you ALL lubricants should be avoided when trying to conceive. Normally the vagina is slightly acidic, but when we ovulate the pH balance in the vagina changes to around 7. This neutral pH state assists conception. The pH balance of Sylk (like most other lubricants) can affect the movement of sperm, so should be avoided.
- I’m pregnant, can I use Sylk?
Yes. It is always best to check with your midwife or GP before using any products whilst pregnant; however we can reassure you that Sylk is safe. Sylk is made from gentle, natural, plant based ingredients free from nasty chemicals, hormones or parabens. Sylk can be used throughout pregnancy and afterwards to assist lovemaking or just to keep everything more comfortable.
- Can I use Sylk if I am breastfeeding?
Yes. Always check with your midwife or health visitor if you experience any vaginal discomfort after childbirth, but often hormone changes when breastfeeding can cause vaginal dryness. Sylk is perfect for your vagina. Sylk has no nasty ingredients that could harm you or your baby and is safe to use as often as you need while breastfeeding.
